Let’s read this article on Population Explosion- A Threat to Country’s Resources…
Introduction-
Pollution explosion is the most grave problem of India today. India faces a number of problems the most pressing problem before our country, at present, is the problem of population. India’s population is growing by leaps and bounds. China is the first in population in the world. Next comes India. With ongoing trends, India will overtake China as the most populous country by 2025 or perhaps sooner. Every year we have a new Australia added to our population. For the last 50 years, it has increased very rapidly.
Effects of Overpopulation-
- If this population explosion continuous as such the increase of demands for eatables clothes and houses also come to the force for the additional population because of limited resources.
- The land is limited and the population is unlimited. What will happen after 10 years? The prices have gone up because of this increase in population with the same resources in hand.
- The levels of overpopulation are seen everywhere that the farm land is divided and further divided. Forests are disappearing. The housing problem is growing serious day by day. Public places are overcrowded. Acute shortages of hospital beds, and other facilities.
- The number of unemployed persons is increasing exponentially. This results a serious threat of their livelihood.
- We have become self sufficient in food grains but for how long can it last? There seems to be a race between the increase in food grains and the population explosion.
- There is another problem of poverty the greater the population the higher the level of poverty because of less opportunity, resource crunch, unemployment, poor facilities etc.
Causes of population growth-
There are many causes behind this problem. Among them a few are mentioning here:
- Lack of awareness and illiteracy- This is the most prevalent cause of exponentially rise in population. people are not much aware about their family planning, etc.
- Social customs- Our social customs are also responsible for making this problem serious. A childless person and an unmarried person is not respected anywhere. So the people have a kind of ill mind set which leads to rise in population.
- Son meta preferences- Due to son meta preferences, parents are neglecting the birth of their girls child in the hope of a boy child. This is gender discrimination give rise to overpopulation.
- Advancement of medical facilities- Due to better medical facilities expectation of life at birth has risen and death rate has fallen. Now the technology developed every kind of treatment for serious health issues which enhances the life expectancy of a person.
- Higher fertility rate due to patriarchal system in less developed areas is another reason for higher population.
Steps to Control the Population Growth-
- There is an urgent need to check the population growth. For this family planning is the only remedy. family planning for welfare means control the number of children in the family. Plannned family is the need of the hour. We should keep this point in mind that the less the number of children, the better they will be looked after and better and happier will their life be.
- Stringent laws must be implemented to control higher birth rate i.e. government must implement two child policy norms.
- The marriage age for boys and girls has been increased.
- The person having only two child should provided special privilege while persons having more than two child make deprived of special facilities in election nomination, government jobs, etc.
Population Control Theories-
Malthusian theory-
Malthus in his work had predicted that the world’s population would grow at a faster rate than the rate of food production. According to Malthus, the population tends to grow exponentially by geometric growth, But food supply grow in a slower arithmetic ratio.
Big Push theory-
Harvard economist Harvey Leibenstein has demonstrated how population growth tends to erode incomes. The main economic theory was that if per capita income is low then people are too poor to save.
How to utilise growing population-
High population is not always bad for economy but it can be utilised as an asset for the country’s welfare. There are a few steps through which we can make our population more productive and beneficial for the country.
- Focus on demographic dividend- According to the government’s population projection, more than 53 % of India’s population in 2021 is under the age of 29. More than a quarter of India’s population is younger. This indicates that we have a large working and independent population in our country. we can utilise this huge manpower for the Welfare of the society.
- Upgrading the skill power- We can make our young population more productive by upgrading them with the various skill powers, by providing them better education, health facilities, etc.
- Focusing on women empowerment- Education of women also plays a crucial role both in case of fertility rates as well as age of mother at the time of birth of first child. Education helps in bringing down fertility and early birth among women. It will create awareness in them.
Conclusion-
Population explosion is a threat to our national development. If this population is not solve, India cannot be a happy healthy and prosperous nation. All efforts must be made to limit the size of the families. For the success of the family planning programme, the cooperation of the people is very necessary.
We need a permanent solution for this problem so immediately otherwise it would be quite late when our population asset will soon convert into a disaster.
